Lord, if that is you command me to come to you on the water Mth 14.28.
Such is the peculiar if-then calculus of all ministers. What does Peter think happens if it’s not Jesus? And who else would it be? Is he testing Jesus or himself? But that’s how people like us think. The life of ministry is a series of beautiful, dangerous and also foolish “if-then steps” out of the boat. Like Peter we take a couple of steps and then lose it. Like Peter Jesus grabs our wrist, hoists us up and walks us back. The next time that happens to you, take heart.
He gently asked why the bold man’s faith sank. Jesus was pleased with his dripping disciple. He knew Peter would need to walk on rougher seas one day.
Jesus didn’t laugh. And he didn’t admonish me for the attempt. He gently asked why the bold man’s faith sank. Jesus was pleased with his dripping disciple. He knew Peter would need to walk on rougher seas one day. Your if-then calculus may or may not get you farther than Peter, but the instinct to step out of safety toward Jesus is part of our calling. So be wise, of course, but don’t spend your life’s work dry. It’s frightening, exhilarating, and humbling, but it’s better than sitting in the boat.
